Sketches of a Life, Part 1 of 3
Mr., Dr. Stevie Wonder
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the subject matter for this 2025 edition of the Annual Bruessard Award, but this particular companion bonus page is devoted to the incomparable Mr., Dr. Stevie Wonder. He was born into this world as Stevland Hardaway Judkins on 13-May-1950—. His last name was legally changed to Morris when he signed a music recording contract with Motown Record in 1961. Morris happens to be an old family name. Stevie Wonder [his stage name] was selected for coverage on this 2025 bonus page because there exists a common denominator or nexus between Stevie Wonder and the topic of AI. The common denominator is intelligence. Whereas AI represents machine intelligence (as initially programmed by humans), Stevie Wonder represents pure, natural, authentic human intelligence. Stevie Wonder is a musical wonder. When it comes to music, he is truly incomparable.
Stevie Wonder is a wonderful human being. He is a father, husband, grandfather, mentor, role model, singer, songwriter, music instrumentalist, music composer, music producer, music arranger, philantropist, businessman, humanitarian, activist, and an occasional comedian (🙂 LOL 😀). Stevie Wonder is quite the versatile musician. Perhaps one of Stevie Wonder's most overlooked, unsung, and underrated talents is the fact that he also is a great poet. He is an overall conscientious and caring human being. Stevie Wonder has led a very accomplished and remarkable life.
To be sure, when it comes to making music, some have described Stevie Wonder as being the 8th wonder of the world alongside the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Stevie Wonder is a music prodigy and a music giant. He has created a prolific body of musical work during his lifetime. (It should be noted that, since the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were named, additional or more contemporary wonders of the world have been named such as the New 7 Wonders of the World, the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, and the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World.) At his core, Stevie Wonder is an all-around great human being who simply wishes and aims to make planet Earth a better place where all of his fellow humans can have happy and productive lives in health, stability, security, safety, peace, prosperity, justice, and freedom.
Sketches of a Life, Part 2 of 3
The following timeline lists some (but not all) of the pivotal or milestone moments in Stevie Wonder's life.
Some Milestone Moments in Stevie Wonder's Life
13-May-1950 - (01)
- Birth of a Genius (01)
-
"On this day in history, Saturday, May 13, 1950, Stevie Wonder was born in Saginaw, Michigan. He was born the third of six children. In adulthood, he would become a member of what is now referred to as the Baby Boomer Generation, which is anyone who was born between the years of 1946 and 1964.
15-July-1961 - (02)
- First Recording Contract Signed (02)
-
At the tender age of 11 years old, Stevie Wonder signed his first recording contract with Motown Record of Detroit, Michigan. According to those who are familiar with Stevie Wonder's rise to fame and stardom, he was discovered in 1961. Stevie Wonder's friend, Gerald White, introduced Stevie Wonder to his brother Ronnie White. In turn, Ronnie White was a member of the famous singing group called The Miracles. Ronnie White was impressed with Stevie Wonder's knack for music. In turn, Ronnie White took Stevie Wonder to Motown Record and introduced Stevie Wonder to Berry Gordy, the owner of Motown Record. Berry Gordy, too, was impressed by the lad. At Motown Record, Stevie Wonder often was called the little boy wonder. He would be given the stage name of Little Stevie Wonder. A recording contract was signed, sealed, and delivered. Stevie Wonder was added to Motown Record's famed roster of recording artists known as the Motown Revue.
16-August-1962 - (03)
- First Single Recording Released (03)
-
At the age of 12 years old, on its Tamla label, Motown Record released Stevie Wonder's single (45 rpm – revolutions per minute) sound recording or song titled "I Call It Pretty Music, But The Old People Call It The Blues." It was not the first song that Stevie Wonder had recorded, but it was his first song widely distributed and promoted to the public. Stevie Wonder's first song was titled "Thank You For Loving Me All The Way". At this point in time, Stevie Wonder also had recorded a song titled "Sunset."
1-September-1962 - (04)
- First Studio Album Released (04)
-
Motown Record released Stevie Wonder's first recorded studio album in 1962 when he was 12 years old. The album was titled The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie. Motown Record released Stevie Wonder's second studio album the same year. It was titled Tribute To Uncle Ray.
21-May-1963 - (05)
- First Hit Single (05)
-
As a part of the album titled The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie, Stevie Wonder had previously recorded the song "Fingertips" in 1962 when he was 12 years old. It was not until 21-May-1963 when Motown Record released a live recording of "Fingertips" for sale to the public. Little Stevie Wonder was 13 years old at this point in time when the live version of the song was released as "Fingertips - Pt 2." The song became a chart-topping hit. "Fingertips - Pt 2" was the song that put Little Stevie Wonder on the map. Little Stevie Wonder was off to the races, so to speak. He had become a public celebrity. Stevie Wonder's hit single set in motion the beginning of the realization of yet another one of those from-rags-to-riches American stories. Or, as the saying goes, after the release of "Fingertips - Pt 2," the rest of the story became the stuff of American music history. The next child recording artist to score a hit recording for Motown Record would occur circa 7-October-1969 () when an 11-year-old Michael Jackson of the Jackson 5 recorded the song titled "I Want You Back."
11-June-1969 - (06)
- Completed School (06)
-
At the age of twelve, Stevie Wonder left the Detroit public elementary or primary school system in 1962. He proceeded to enroll in school at the Michigan School for the Blind (MSB) in Lansing, Michigan to complete his formal education. Seven years later, in 1969 and at the age of 19, Stevie Wonder graduated from MSB with honors. He now is known simply as Stevie Wonder instead of Little Stevie Wonder. Several years after graduating from MSB, Stevie Wonder would enroll in music theory classes at the University of Southern California (USC). He was ready to broaden his music repertoire and expand his music horizons beyond the popular Motown Record sound.
14-September-1970 - (07)
- First Marriage (07)
-
Stevie Wonder met Syreeta Wright in 1968. After a period of courtship, they were married in 1970. They amicably got divorced 18 months after the marriage. In the interim during their period of courtship and marriage, Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright managed to create some beautiful music together.
1-June-1971 - (08)
- Founded Black Bull Music (08)
-
At the age of 21 years old in 1971, Stevie Wonder had reached legal adulthood. Stevie Wonder gained access to his earnings (royalties) that Motown Record had been holding in trust for him until he reached adulthood. As an adult, Stevie Wonder had begun to take charge of his life. He had begun to make independent decisions about his recording future. He founded Black Bull Music, a music publishing company, to control his music publishing rights.
1-July-1971 - (09)
- Liberation Day with Creative Independence Gained (09)
-
Stevie Wonder's second recording contract with Motown Record ended when he turned 21 years old on 13-May-1971. He (along with his lawyer Johanan Vigoda) negotiated a new (and a more financially lucrative) recording contract with Motown Record. The new recording contract granted Stevie Wonder an unprecedented level of creative control over his music. Stevie Wonder proceeded to release an album titled Where I'm Coming From, which stood as a testament to his maturation as a recording artist and to his newly gained artistic freedom.
During this 1971 period, Stevie Wonder had begun a collaboration with Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margouleff, the famed creators of the TONTO (The Original New Timbral Orchestra) synthesizer. At this stage in his music career, Stevie Wonder moved beyond his beloved clavinet and began to explore other kinds of electronic and synthesizer music in greater depth. Stevie Wonder's collaboration with Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margouleff led to the production of four outstanding, groundbreaking, and award-winning albums: (1) Music Of My Mind, (2) Talking Book, (3) Innervisions, and (4) Fulfillingness' First Finale. The culmination of Stevie Wonder's dive into electronic or synthesizer music came with his ambitious, groundbreaking, and classic production of the 1979 soundtrack album titled Stevie Wonder's Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants, which I personally deem as a masterpiece. Stevie Wonder is quoted as saying that the synthesizers allowed him to "bend music" in ways unimaginable in comparison to him relying strictly on the use of a studio band to compose music as was traditionally the case at Motown Record.
The synthesizer approach to music allowed Stevie Wonder to outwardly express the music in his mind. Stevie Wonder's newly embraced synthesized musical expression was on full display when Stevie Wonder created songs such as "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)." Synthesizers, with their ability to mimic different sounds, different sound effects, and different instruments, at times, allowed Stevie Wonder to become something of a one-person band. The one-person band or all-instruments effect of Stevie Wonder's music making was on full display with the production of his soundtrack album titled Stevie Wonder's Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants.

6-August-1973 - (10)
- Automobile Accident (10)
-
On 6-August-1973 at the age of 23 years old, after completing a concert in Greenville, South Carolina, Stevie Wonder was a passenger in a car which was involved in an automobile collision. Stevie Wonder was hospitalized. He was in a comatose state. He was under intensive care for several days. Luckily, he snapped out of the coma. He made a full recovery. The accident gave new meaning to his then newly recorded song titled "Higher Ground."
2-March-1974 - (11)
- First Grammy (11)
-
Stevie Wonder won his first of five Grammy awards on this date in conjunction with his album titled Innervisions. With the passage of time, Stevie Wonder would go on to receive many more Grammy awards in addition to other types of awards and recognitions. Many of these awards and recognitions are listed in the table below.
2-February-1975 - (12)
- First Child (12)
-
Stevie Wonder's romantic mate at this point in time was Yolanda Simmons. She gave birth to their first child. It was a girl. They named her Aisha Morris. With the passage of time, Stevie Wonder would go on to become the father of nine children in total. Baby Aisha was the inspiration for Stevie Wonder's hit single titled "Isn't She Lovely." In a clip from the Songs in the Key of Life documentary DVD, regarding "Isn't She Lovely," Stevie Wonder revealed that it sounded like Aisha was saying "beat me" as she gurgled in the song, which, of course, Stevie Wonder would never beat his baby. When I used to listen to the song, I always thought Stevie Wonder was saying "sounds like she said feed me."
14-May-1978 - (13)
- First Doctorate Degree (13)
-
Stevie Wonder received his first honorary doctorate (or PhD) degree from Howard University, which conferred upon him the distinguished title of Dr. Stevie Wonder. He later would be granted many more honorary doctorate degrees. Receiving an honorary doctorate degree is somewhat equivalent to receiving the knighthood in the United Kingdom, for instance, Sir James Paul McCartney. As a side note about the doctorate degree, looking back, it is still comical to me from the time when I attended graduate school in Ohio while pursuing the master's degree. As a part of the requirements to earn the master's degree, we (graduate students at the university) were required to teach a course for one year. I was assigned to teach a civics course to incoming, first-year freshmen undergraduate students. Some of my students, having freshly arrived to college from high school, often would address me as Dr. Bruessard. I found that to be hilarious. I think my students thought that the proper way to address all college instructors would be to refer to them with the title of Dr. (for PhD). Of course, the faculty members at the university truly had earned the doctorate degree, but I was a long ways from reaching the PhD level of study.
15-January-1979 - (14)
- Provided Support for Passage of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Holiday Bill (14)
-
The date 15-January-1979 would have been Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 50th birthday, that is, if he had not been assassinated on 4-April-1968 at the young age of 39 years old. On 15-January-1979, Stevie Wonder attended a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday bill rally in Atlanta, Georgia where he publicly pledged to support passage of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday holiday bill. Stevie Wonder proceeded to work with Dr. King's widow, Coretta Scott King, and congressman John Conyers to gain passage of the bill. Congressman John Conyers first introduced the Dr. King holiday bill in Congress on 8-April-1968, which was four days after Dr. King was assassinated. Stevie Wonder's song titled "Happy Birthday" became an anthem for passage of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday bill. The holiday bill eventually was passed and signed into law on 2-November-1983. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday was officially established to be observed starting on 20-January-1986 and thereafter on every third Monday of the month in January.

From most accounts, Stevie Wonder has lived a stellar, honest, humble, respectful, and reputable life. However, even Stevie Wonder has not been able to escape conflict and controversy. A sketch of Stevie Wonder's life would not be complete without mentioning these conflicts and controversies. Here is a brief outline of some of the conflicts and controversies that Stevie Wonder has had to endure as he has travelled down the road of his illustrious career.
- circa 8-February-1990 () - Stevie Wonder was accused of, and sued for, plagiarizing the song titled "I Just Called To Say I Love You" by a songwriting colleague of his.
- circa 5-October-2001 () - Stevie Wonder was sued for palimony by a former live-in girlfriend.
- circa 31-January-2002 () - Stevie Wonder was sued for violating the copyright on the song titled "For Your Love." Another songwriter claimed that he had written "For Your Love" and shared it with Stevie Wonder prior to Stevie Wonder recording the song.
- circa 15-February-2008 () - Stevie Wonder was sued for defamation by a former employee of his Los Angeles radio station [along with two other employees of the radio station also being sued].
- circa 26-July-2012 () - Stevie Wonder's cousin attempted to extort millions of dollars from Stevie Wonder by producing an unflattering video about Stevie Wonder and then threatening to release the video into the public sphere if he did not receive compensation from Stevie Wonder to remain quiet and to destroy the video. I suppose Stevie Wonder's cousin was banking on media outlets and the paparazzi not resisting the temptation to gnaw on a juicy scandal.
- circa 26-February-2015 () - The widow of Stevie Wonder's former attorney sued Stevie Wonder for breach of contract. When Stevie Wonder renewed his recording contract with Motown Record, his attorney inserted a clause into the contract that required Stevie Wonder to pay him or his heirs a 6 percentage share of Stevie Wonder's royalties in perpetuity or forever. Two years after Stevie Wonder's attorney died, his wife sued Stevie Wonder on the grounds that Stevie Wonder had stopped honoring the 6 percentage sharing clause of the contract.
Stevie Wonder was not the instigator or initiator of any of these scandal-tainted conflicts and controversies. These conflicts and controversies were visited upon Stevie Wonder's doorsteps by others. In a nutshell, all of these conflicts and controversies centered on money. Fortunately, Stevie Wonder prevailed untarnished and his reputation was left unscathed from each of these court cases. In each instance, the courts ruled in Stevie Wonder's favor except, on a couple of occasions, the cases were settled out of court with little fanfare (namely, the palimony lawsuit and the widow lawsuit).

Summarizing Stevie Wonder's Body of Work
Stevie Wonder is a gifted musician. As a result, over the years, he has been the recipient of numerous tributes, honors, and accolades. The table below summarizes many (but not all) of Stevie Wonder's life works, awards, recognitions, and achievements.
Note 1 for Table Below: In most cases, performing a general or "smart search" of the contents in a dataset is sufficient to obtain any specific results that you would like to see from the dataset. The "Treat as regex" option in the table below is available for the benefit of those who are accustomed to searching datasets using regular expressions also called regexes for short. Regular-expression searches, in part, are used to perform advanced, compound, or complex searches for specific strings of text. Mastering the use of regular expressions almost feels like learning how to write programming code. Regular expressions are particularly useful when executing global searches on the data. This YouTube video provides a quick tutorial to demonstrate how regular expressions are used to perform text searches. Remember to always clear or erase any input from the field(s) in the "Search text" column for the table below to display all of the data in the table unfiltered.
Say, for example in the table below, you wanted to display a list of all of Stevie Wonder's studio albums, but you also wanted to see a list of all of the songs appearing on those studio albums. First, you would set the "entries per page" from 10 to 750 to make certain that all of the searched items displayed on one screen. Next, you would check the "Treat as regex" box and uncheck the "Use smart search" box alongside the "Global search" target field. Then, in the table below, one very simple way to accomplish this task would be to type (or copy and paste) "album / cd | in album" into the "Global search" field [without the quotation marks]. Your requested results would display. To display all of the data in the table again, you should erase or delete your example input [album / cd | in album] from the "Global search" field. You also should uncheck the "Treat as regex" box and check the "Use smart search" box to return to performing generic searches and filtering of the data in the table. Finally, you might wish to consider setting the "entries per page" back to, say, 10. If the number of "entries per page" is set to 750, then all of the data in the table will display on screen necessitating a lot of scrolling. See the following demonstration image with yellow highlights:
Note 2 for Table Below: For the year column in the table below and for purposes of calculating the time ago, in those instances where only the year was available but not the month and date, then June 30th was used as the year's default month and date. There were some instances in which even the year was not available. In those instances when no year was available, then "Unknown" was used.
Note 3 for Table Below: For quick filtering of the data in the table by category, the nine categories in the table below are as follows (and, for example, if you only wanted to see the names of Stevie Wonder's motion picture soundtrack albums, then you could type either the word Movie or the word Soundtrack into the Category box to reveal three movie soundtrack albums):
- Album / CD
- Award / Recognition
- Compilation / Best of
- Honorary Degree
- Duet
- DVD/Video
- Live
- Single / MP3
- Movie Soundtrack

If given a say in the matter, I imagine that Stevie Wonder probably would choose not to be labeled or categorized as fitting into a "classic period" and a "commercial period" during his illustrious music-making career. He simply creates, plays, and sings the music as he envisions and feels it. Nevertheless, the images at the top and bottom of this bonus page are from one of Stevie Wonder's greatest hits albums/CDs titled Original Musiquarium I from 1982. In retrospect, if it were left for me to choose, then my version of Original Musiquarium I would have contained the following seven albums as depicted in the image below:
Solar System1
1. Where I'm Coming From (1971)
2. Music Of My Mind (1972)
3. Talking Book (1972)
4. Innervisions (1973)
5. Fullingness' First Finale (1974)
6. Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
7. Stevie Wonder's Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants (1979, soundtrack)
If there existed such a thing as an Original Musiquarium II release, and if I had to decide, then I would have chosen the following seven albums to represent Original Musiquarium II as depicted in the image below:
1. Hotter than July (1980)
2. The Woman in Red (1984, soundtrack)
3. In Square Circle (1985)
4. Characters (1987)
5. Jungle Fever (1991, soundtrack)
6. Conversation Peace (1995)
7. A Time to Love (2005)
Solar System2
Of course, instead of an Original Musiquarium II, Stevie Wonder later would release album compilations such as Natural Wonder in 1995, At The Close Of A Century in 1999, and Stevie Wonder The Definitive Collection in 2002. These various album compilations releases are somewhat equivalent to being the same thing as an imagined Original Musiquarium II release.
Closing Thoughts: Forever Reaching for Higher Ground
Saturn
It's been said that if you reach for the stars, then perhaps you just might land on the Moon. Stevie Wonder is one who has been reaching for the stars all of his life. Maybe, one day, the world will join Stevie Wonder in his quest for higher ground.
I wish to conclude this Stevie Wonder bonus page by diving into a scientific view of the planet Saturn. Why Saturn you ask? What is the linkage between the planet Saturn and Stevie Wonder? A linkage exists between Stevie Wonder and the planet Saturn because Stevie Wonder has performed a song titled "Saturn." A contrast can be seen between scientific Saturn and Stevie Wonder's poetic Saturn. Stevie Wonder's musical rendition of "Saturn" can be interpreted as being a metaphor for an idealized future Earth—or, an "Earth that can be" as opposed to the "Earth that is."
As indicated by the other planets and the other heavenly bodies throughout the Solar System, Earth is not alone. It seems as if humans were alone on planet Earth, but Earth is by no means the only game in town, so to speak. It turns out that Earth has many active neighbors throughout the wider neighborhood of space known as the Solar System. To be sure, according to NASA, the Solar System contains "eight planets, and five dwarf planets; about 1.4 million asteroids, about 4,000 comets; and hundreds of moons." Earth, therefore, has many companions.
According to NASA, Saturn alone "has 274 confirmed moons in its orbit, far more than any other planet in our solar system. In March 2025, astronomers confirmed the discovery of 128 small moons around Saturn bringing the total number of confirmed moons to 274…As of March 25, 2025, there were…891 confirmed moons in our solar system…Saturn's moons range in size from larger than the planet Mercury—the giant moon Titan—to as small as a sports arena. The small moon Enceladus has a global ocean under a thick, icy shell."
In comparison to the other heavenly bodies in the Solar System, the unique thing about Earth is this: Earth is the only heavenly body in the Solar System—and heretofore it is the only known heavenly body throughout the entire Universe that is known by humans—to harbor and sustain life. Earth teems with all kinds of life. Human life is believed to be the pinnacle of life on Earth. While their destinations will not likely be Saturn, visionaries such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos (among others) do foresee a future day in which humans will be inhabiting another heavenly body somewhere else in the Solar System. For the moment, Elon Musk seems to be fixated on humans inhabiting Earth-like planet Mars. But, for now, and much like Stevie Wonder's song "Saturn" itself, these kinds of futuristic visions are merely the stuff of science fiction. For this moment in time, these kinds of futuristic visions are merely the stuff of yet-to-be-realized illusionary dreams. The dream continues, nevertheless. The fire of discovery remains ignited within the human spirit. The human thirst for exploration and discovery has not yet been quenched. The human fascination with learning new things has not been satisfied; indeed, the fascination has expanded.
Finally, I will close this 2025 Stevie Wonder bonus page by recounting to the reader a humorous but true story about my personal Stevie Wonder adventure many years ago. I travelled by way of Ohio and Mississippi to reach California. I reached my destination of Oakland, California in January 1980 at the age of 24. I had just completed all of the coursework required to receive the master's degree in public administration, but I did not complete the master's thesis. I also had completed a rough draft of the book The Age of Homo Sapiens Sapiens: Heaven or Hell at that 1980 point in time. I was—and I still am—a super fan of Stevie Wonder. I was very much inspired by Stevie Wonder's soundtrack album titled Stevie Wonder's Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants.
I also was a very naive former college student (much like my students were naive and innocent when they would refer to me as Dr. Bruessard). I suppose it is fair to say that I was just another one of those Mississippi country bunkins who simply did not know any better than to attempt to impose myself uninvited upon another's privacy. Yet, at the time, I was young and naive. In a sense, I was sort of like the man in Stevie Wonder's song titled "Living For The City" who had just gotten off the Greyhound bus in New York City. I felt that I had something to offer Stevie Wonder in the form of some type of collaboration. So, I naively decided to take a trip to Malibu to pay Stevie Wonder a visit. I had read in a magazine that Stevie Wonder lived in Malibu, California. With me having a Mississippi upbringing, I did not know much about gated communities, about the lifestyles of the rich and famous, or about celebrities owning multiple homes other than what I saw on television or in the movies. I naively thought that I could go to Stevie Wonder's house, knock on his door, introduce myself, and sit down and have a nice conversation with him about doing some sort of collaboration. After all, in the Greenville, Mississippi town and in the neighborhood where I grew up, it was not unusual to do such a thing like stopping to have a friendly chat with any of the neighbors. (Of course, it did not hurt the fact that I also was the newspaper carrier for the neighborhood. In the process of delivering the daily newspapers, I became acquainted with practically every household in the neighborhood.)
So, shortly after arriving in California, I boarded a Greyhound bus in Oakland, California and proceeded down scenic Highway 1 en route to Malibu, California. I was on a trek to meet Stevie Wonder. If I recall correctly, I might have arrived at Malibu around 3:00 in the afternoon on a Saturday. Needless to say, once in Malibu, I was greeted by a gated-community awakening. After I got the lay of the land at Malibu and after the Greyhound bus had dropped me off at the Malibu bus stop and had departed Malibu en route to Los Angeles, California, there I stood stranded on Highway 1 near a gated entrance. For all I knew, at the time when I undertook my trip to Malibu, Stevie Wonder could have been away from home in concert. He also could have been visiting London, England or some other faraway place such as Accra, Ghana. (As an aside, bear in mind that my trip to Malibu occurred at a point in time when there existed no World Wide Web, and there was no such thing as social media. Use of personal computers had not become widespread. Technology corporations such as Yahoo, Google, Facebook, and Amazon had not come into existence. There was no such thing as cellular phones, and pay telephone booths were still en vogue for making away-from-home phone calls.)
Luckily for me, everything worked out. I was not stranded for long. I reached Malibu at about the same time that a very kind postal worker was making his mail deliveries to the Malibu area. I guess he must have noticed how out of place I looked standing there alone by the highway. He asked me if I was lost. I told him, "No." I told him that I had taken the Greyhound bus from Oakland to Malibu. I told him that I had come to Malibu to visit Stevie Wonder. I told him that I had written a book of poetry and that I wanted to discuss it with Stevie Wonder. Maybe, at the time, I naively thought that perhaps I could get Stevie Wonder interested in setting at least one of my poems to music.
The postal worker laughed. I am sure mine was not the first "Hollywood" story that he had encountered. He told me to climb aboard his postal truck. He gave me a ride to the Los Angeles Greyhound bus station. Although my trip to Malibu occurred , I think the postal worker told me that his name was James. I think he said that he lived in the Watts area of Los Angeles. I wrote down his name on a piece of paper at the time, but I misplaced the piece of paper over the intervening years. I remain eternally grateful to him for giving me a ride from Malibu to the Los Angeles Greyhound bus station.
So, that's the humorous but true story behind my 1980 Malibu adventure to visit Stevie Wonder. I think Stevie Wonder would get a big, hearty laugh about it if he should ever hear about my true story. A true story such as mine is perhaps just one among many that Stevie Wonder must have experienced throughout his musical career. I still laugh about my trip to Malibu to this day in 2025. Now that I have become more intimately familiar with how things work in California, to this day, I keep saying to myself, "What was I thinking when I took that Greyhound bus trip to Malibu?" Even if I would have been fortunate enough to meet with Stevie Wonder, I do not think I had an exit plan for Malibu other than to go back to the bus stop and wait for the next Greyhound bus to arrive.
Looking back at my Malibu adventure, going to Malibu was not a very smart thing for me to do. It was a downright crazy thing for me to do! Of course, at the time, my trip to Malibu was undertaken out of complete sincerity, naïveté, and innocence. At the time in 1980, I did not think much of taking that trip to Malibu other than being filled with excitement and anticipation at the notion of meeting Stevie Wonder. Overall, it turned out to be a fun ride and an exciting bus trip down California's scenic Highway 1 en route to Malibu. On my return trip home to Oakland, the Greyhound bus took the much less scenic Interstate 5 route.
Through creating this bonus page, at long last, I feel honored to have gotten the opportunity to pay a special tribute to Stevie Wonder, a music icon and my all-time favorite recording artist. After all, Stevie Wonder is the g.o.a.t. (greatest of all times) when it comes to the contemporary music scene. Stevie Wonder is forever reaching for higher ground.
